Top UP Your NOL Card With 50 Dirhams Starting Today. Dubai public transport system has introduced updated regulations for Nol card recharges at metro station ticket offices. Commuters who prefer in-person top-ups should be aware of the recent changes to minimum charging amounts.

What’s Changed?

Effective August 17, 2024, passengers topping up their Nol cards at metro station ticket counters must add a minimum of 50 dirhams to their balance. This represents a significant increase from the previous 20-dirham minimum that was implemented earlier in January of the same year.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) confirmed this adjustment in their official announcement on Friday, clarifying that the new policy applies specifically to recharges conducted at physical ticket offices within metro stations.

Online Top-Ups Remain Unaffected

An important distinction in this policy is that passengers who choose digital payment methods are exempt from this requirement. Those who recharge their cards through online platforms or mobile applications can continue adding any amount they prefer without being bound by the 50-dirham minimum threshold.

Understanding Nol Card Balance Requirements

Travelers using Dubai’s metro network should maintain at least 15 dirhams in their card balance. This amount ensures coverage for a complete return journey across the metro system, preventing any interruptions during travel.

The Nol Card’s Broader Application

Beyond metro travel, the Nol prepaid smart card serves as a versatile payment tool throughout Dubai’s transportation infrastructure. Cardholders can use it across multiple services including bus routes, tram lines, and water taxi operations. The card’s functionality extends beyond public transport, offering payment options for taxi services, parking facilities, and admission to cultural venues such as the Etihad Museum and Dubai’s public parks. Additionally, more than 2,000 retail establishments, dining venues, and shops across the city accept Nol cards as a payment method.

Timeline of Changes

The current change follows an earlier modification implemented in January 2024, when the authority raised the minimum top-up from 5 dirhams to 20 dirhams at metro station ticket offices. The progression from 5 dirhams to 20 dirhams, and now to 50 dirhams, reflects the ongoing evolution of Dubai’s public transport payment systems and the authority’s efforts to streamline ticket counter operations.

Planning Your Travel

For commuters who regularly use metro services, planning ahead with adequate card balances or utilizing online recharge options may provide greater flexibility in managing transportation expenses. The 50-dirham minimum at ticket counters encourages passengers to either maintain higher balances or explore convenient online recharge alternatives that offer more flexibility in payment amounts.
